Thomas W. Gallant

Thomas W. Gallant is a history professor and holds the Nicholas Family Endowed Chair in Modern Greek History at the University of California, San Diego. He is also the co-director of the UC San Diego Center for Hellenic Studies. Previously, he served as a professor of Greek history and anthropology at the University of Florida and held the chair of modern Greek history at York University in Toronto from 2002 to 2007. Additionally, he has been the president of the Modern Greek Studies Association. He edited the ten-volume "Edinburgh History of the Greeks," and authored the ninth volume, "The Long Nineteenth Century" (2014). His other books include "Modern Greece - A Brief History," 2001, 2nd ed. "Modern Greece: From the War of Independence to the Present," 2016 (Greek edition "Νεότερη Ελλάδα," Pedio, 2017), "Modern Greece, Experiencing Dominion: Culture, Identity and Power in the British Mediterranean," 2003 (MGSD Best Book Prize, Greek edition "Η εμπειρία της αποικιακής κυριαρχίας: Πολιτισμός, ταυτότητα και εξουσία στα Επτάνησα 1817-1864," Alexandria, 2014), "The 1918 Anti-Greek Riot in Toronto," 2005, "Outlaws: Bandits, Pirates and the Making of the Modern World," 2014, "Murder on Black Mountain: Love and Death on a Nineteenth Century Greek Island," 2016, and "Athens: A Social History," forthcoming in 2018. He is the social sciences editor for the "Journal of Modern Greek Studies" and leads the Kefalonia and Andros Social History and Archaeology Project (KASHAP).
