Dimitris CHouliarakis

Dimitris Chouliarakis was born in 1957 in Athens. He studied social sciences and journalism at the University of Warsaw (bachelor's and master's degrees) and attended directing seminars at the Lodz Film School in Poland. Between 1977 and 1999, he worked as an editor for morning newspapers in Athens and various magazines. After 2000, he served as a content editor for the "Books" supplement of the "Vima" newspaper. He has published several poetry books: "In Favor of Nipples and Beaks" (Eirini, 1983), "The Black Metals of Desire" (Manoutios, 1985), "Superga is Waiting" (Kaveiros, 1987, 1992; To Rodakio, 1999), "The Relic of Days" (Kedros, 1994), "Life Enclosed" (To Rodakio, 2002, awarded the Poetry Prize of "Diavazo" magazine and the Lambros Porphyra Prize from the Academy of Athens), "Unapologetic on the Swings at Noon" (To Rodakio, 2013, awarded the Nanas Kontou Prize from the Academy of Athens), "The Upper Garden" (To Rodakio, 2017), "Soul in the Teeth" (To Rodakio, 2019, awarded the poetry prize from the magazine www.oanagnostis.gr). He has translated prose, poetry, and theater from English, Polish, and Turkish, including works by Bruno Schulz ("The Cinnamon Shops," Nefeli, 1987; "The Night of the Great Season," Nefeli, 1996), W.B. Yeats ("The Death of Cuchulain," To Rodakio, 1993), Rudyard Kipling ("If," Kastaniotis, 1993), James Joyce ("Epiphanies," To Rodakio, 1994), Eugene O'Neill ("The Emperor Jones," reprint from "Ekivolos" magazine issue 18, winter 1997), Gunnar Ekelöf (Ten Poems, Swedish Institute of Alexandria, 2005), Juliusz Słowacki ("The Tomb of Agamemnon," Gavriilidis, 2006), Lao Tzu ("Tao Te Ching," Melani, 2007), Tadeusz Miciński ("The Reverend Faust," Kastaniotis, 2008), Jan Kochanowski ("Laments," Gavriilidis, 2009), Cyprian Kamil Norwid ("Chopin's Piano," To Rodakio, 2010), Marek Hłasko ("Those Who Burned the Rice," Melani, 2010), Ömer Seyfettin ("The Bomb," To Rodakio, 2017), Evliya Çelebi ("Come and Go with Wizards and Vampires," To Rodakio, 2018), Karacaoğlan ("The Love for Elif," To Rodakio, 2018), the Turkish folk drama "The Wicked Beauty" (To Rodakio, 2019), among others. He has also translated works for literary magazines by authors such as Cyprian Kamil Norwid, W.H. Auden, Jalaluddin Rumi, Tadeusz Różewicz, Wisława Szymborska, Zbigniew Herbert, Adam Mickiewicz, Marek Hłasko, Yevgeny Yevtushenko, and others.
