Konstantinos Xanthopoulos
Konstantinos Xanthopoulos was born in 1943 in Kisangani (formerly Stanleyville, Congo). He studied at the School of Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens (1960-1965) and pursued postgraduate studies at the Graduate School of Architecture and Planning at Columbia University in New York (Health Services Planning and Design Program, 1969-1970, M.Sc.). He holds a Ph.D. from the same university (Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, 1970-1973). He taught Hospital Building Typology and Architectural Design at Columbia University, initially as a tutor and lecturer (1971-1973), and later as an assistant professor and associate director of the graduate program in Hospital Planning and Design (1973-1974). In 2000, he was appointed professor of Building Typology and taught at the Department of Architecture at the Polytechnic School of the University of Patras. He resigned from his academic position in 2006. He was a researcher at research centers in New York (Educational Facilities Laboratories and Center for Community Health Systems at Columbia University's School of Public Health, 1972-1974) and as a fellow at the Swedish Institute for Planning and Rationalization of Health and Social Services in Stockholm (Spri, 1977-1978). In 2005, he conducted research at the Archives of Assistance Publique-Hopitaux de Paris (AP-HP). Before leaving for studies in the USA, he worked at the office of Professor Kyprianos Biris (1965-1969) and, upon returning to Greece, at the Doxiadis Office as head of architectural studies (1974-1976). In 1978, he founded a private office with colleagues and engaged in architectural studies and competitions, mainly for specialized buildings (schools, hospitals, etc.). The office operated until 2008. He has written and published essays, articles, and university textbooks (Hellenic Open University) on topics including the architecture of health buildings, hospitals, and schools. Since 2007, he has been living and working permanently in Helsinki.
