Demosthenes Koukounas is a journalist and historical author. He was born in 1950 in Patras and grew up in Athens. He studied economics in England but became involved in writing books, journalism, and publishing from a young age. In journalism, he initially worked in economic reporting and later in political reporting for daily Athenian newspapers. He served as editor-in-chief for various newspapers and was the editorial director of the newspaper "Eleftheros," which he founded in 1986 with publisher Ioannis Mastoras. He was also the publisher-director of "Neologos Patron" and in recent years has managed the magazines "Labyrinth," "Tote," and other historical magazines, as well as the publishing company "Metron." He is the author of numerous books, primarily historical and biographical, including: "The German Invasion and the Capitulation," "The Entrance of the Germans into Athens," "The Battle of Crete," "Greek Politicians," "Archbishop Damaskinos," "Aris Velouchiotis, the Controversial Chief Captain of ELAS," "Nikos Zachariadis," among others. He has focused particularly on the History of the Occupation, and recently (2009) released his books "The Germans in Greece," "The Occupation in Athens and Thessaloniki," "The First Occupation Government of Tsolakoglou," "Crete under Occupation," "German and Italian Espionage," and "The Italians in Greece." He has authored many articles of historical content in newspapers, magazines, collective editions, and conference proceedings. Alongside his historical work, since 1992, he has been the director of the Greek biographical editions "Who's Who." Together with his daughter Natasha Koukounas, he published the three-volume "Biographical Encyclopedia of Modern Hellenism 1830-2010 - Archives of Greek Biography" (2011), and subsequently, they manage the English-language edition "The European Who's Who."
