THeodoros Papagelis

THeodoros Papagelis
Theodoros Papangelis is a Professor of Latin Philology at the Department of Philology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a member of the Academy of Athens. He was born in 1952 in Thessaloniki, where he currently resides. He holds a degree in Classical Philology from the University of Thessaloniki and a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. His academic studies, both in foreign languages and Greek, focus on Latin and Hellenistic literature. His translation of Ovid's "The Art of Love" (Kastaniotis, 2000) aims to be more accessible to the general reading public, presenting the most elaborate and witty erotic proclamation in the history of Western poetry. His most recent book, titled "Rome and Its World" (INS, Manolis Triantafyllidis Foundation, 2005), explores less obvious paths to guide visitors through the landmarks and noteworthy aspects of Rome's historical and cultural grandeur. Since 1978, he has been teaching (or at least attempting to) in the academic sanctuaries of the Department of Philology at the University of Thessaloniki, emerging mainly as a guest of "New Eras." Since April 2013, he has been a regular member of the Academy of Athens.
