Fanos Dymiotis

Phanos Dymiotis (Nicosia, April 3, 1965 - USA, March 10, 2007) was a Cypriot composer and violinist. His musical talent emerged at a young age: while still a high school student, his composition "String Quartet No. 1" (1979) was selected to represent Cyprus at events for the Year of the Child in Sofia. He completed his secondary education at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, which prepares gifted children for higher education institutions. In 1983, he was admitted to the University of Cambridge (at Trinity Hall), where he studied at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Subsequently, he moved to the USA, where, from 1987 to 1993, he completed a doctoral dissertation at Princeton University on the Symphonies of Sibelius. He taught as a lecturer at Goucher College in Baltimore from 1995 to 1998, and until his unexpected death in an accident (March 10, 2007), he participated in many musical ensembles on the East Coast of the USA. He received numerous honors and awards: 1st prize in the Composition Competition organized by the Ministry of Education of Cyprus on the occasion of the International Year of Music, 1985. 2nd prize in the Bernard Shore Viola Composition Competition, 1986. 3rd prize in the Benjamin Britten International Composition Competition, 1987. 1st prize in the Composition Competition organized by the University of Cyprus for Orchestral Composition, 1992. 3rd prize in the competition for orchestral composition of contemporary classical music, Cyprus, 2005.
