Gerasimos A. Markantonatos

Gerasimos Markantonatos was born in Kefalonia in 1938. He studied at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens and, with a scholarship from the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY), continued his studies at an English university, where he earned a Ph.D. in Classical Philology. He later also obtained a degree in English Philology from the University of Athens. He taught for many years in secondary education (1963-1996), retiring as a school counselor for philologists. He also taught for a period at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Crete. He has written over 50 books published by Gutenberg Publishing and has published numerous articles and studies on topics of Ancient and Modern Greek Philology in Greek and international journals. His most important works include his dissertation on tragic irony, his critical-interpretative editions of Sophocles' tragedies "Oedipus Rex," "Antigone," and "Philoctetes," Euripides' "Iphigenia in Tauris," and Thucydides' "Pericles' Funeral Oration," as well as the dictionaries: "Basic Dictionary of Ancient Greek Language," "Basic Dictionary of Latin Language," "Basic Dictionary of Literary Terms," and "Dictionary of Ancient, Byzantine, and Learned Phrases of Modern Greek," which have undergone many reprints and editions. He has authored a series of educational aids for Ancient Greek Language and its teaching for all grades of Gymnasium and Lyceum. His books are considered the most authoritative and useful interpretative works written so far for teachers and students in secondary education. Their primary aim is to offer, with philological expertise and pedagogical methodology, everything necessary for the most comfortable and comprehensive understanding and more fruitful interpretation of ancient Greek texts taught in secondary education. With the quality, scientific validity, and aesthetic excellence of his book editions, Gerasimos Markantonatos is perhaps the best-known and one of the most significant authors of his kind among his fellow philologists.
