Aikaterini Koumarianou

The historian Aikaterini Koumarianou was born in 1919, with her father's family hailing from Constantinople and her mother's from Chios. She studied at the School of Philosophy of the University of Athens. She pursued postgraduate studies in Paris at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS, 1969-1974). She was appointed as a professor of Modern Greek Language and Literature at the University of Sorbonne (Universite Paris - Sorbonne, Paris IV) and served as the director of the Institut Neoellenique (1978-1983) at the same university. She was a visiting professor at the Law School of the University of Athens in the Department of Political Science and at the University of Cyprus in the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies (1999-2008). Her work focused on the history of modern Greek literature and education in relation to the European history of ideas. Her research and publications covered areas such as Greek publishing production, the history of the Greek press, travel literature, the Modern Greek Enlightenment movement, and were chronologically defined from the 17th to the 19th century. She was a member of many scientific societies and served for many years as the president of the Hellenic Cartographic Society. Among her works are "The Modern Geography of the Dimitrieis" (Ziti Publications), "History of the Greek Press" (Ermis Publications), "Cairene Studies" (Cairene Library), "Athens, the City - the People" (Potamos Publications), and numerous articles, announcements, and contributions to collective works. She passed away "full of days" in Athens on May 14, 2012.
