Giannis Papakostas

Giannis Papakostas was born in Rizovouni, Preveza, in 1939. He is an Emeritus Professor of Modern Greek Philology at the University of Athens. He studied Modern Greek Philology (on a scholarship) at the University of Ioannina and Classical Philology at the University of Athens. He holds a doctorate and a habilitation from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Athens. He has conducted research in libraries in Istanbul and Bucharest. Between 2007 and 2009, he taught in the Graduate Program at the University of Granada. He has collaborated with the magazines "Diavazo," "I Lexi," "Nea Estia," "K," "Poetika," and with the newspapers "To Vima," "Ta Nea," "Eleftherotypia," and "Kathimerini." He has been honored three times (1985, 1992, 2005) by the Academy of Athens. He served as a member of the State Literary Awards Committee (1996-1997) and as its President from 1998 to 2001. Since June 2002, he has been a member of the National Council for Radio and Television.
