Pierre Grimal (1912-1996) was born in Paris. He was an emeritus professor at the University of Paris-Sorbonne and a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres and the École Française de Rome. A historian and Latinist, he authored numerous studies on Greek and Roman antiquity. His most well-known work in Greece is the "Dictionary of Greek and Roman Mythology." Today, he is considered among the great French classicists, not only in his homeland. In 1993, three years before his death, he was awarded honorary doctorates from the universities of Rome and Athens. "The Roman Empire" is his last book.
