
Maro Douka
Maro Douka, one of the most significant authors in contemporary Greek literature, was born in 1947 in Chania. In 1966, she moved to Athens, where she has lived ever since. She graduated from the Department of History and Archaeology at the School of Philosophy of the University of Athens. She made her literary debut in 1974 with the novellas "The Well" and "Some People." She has published a total of three novellas, two short story collections, ten novels, and two essays: "The Novelist and His Jar" (1992) and "Nothing is Given" (2016). In 2005, she published the memoir "The Black Patent Leather Shoes" as part of the "The Writer's Kitchen" series by Patakis Publishers. She has been honored with the "Nikos Kazantzakis" Award by the Municipality of Heraklion for the novel "Ancient Rust," the Second State Literature Prize for the novel "Floating City," and the Kostas Ouranis Award from the Academy of Athens for the novel "Innocents and Guilty," which also received the Balkanika Prize and the "Cavafy" Prize. Her novel "Let's Tell Lies" was awarded the "Nikos Themelis" prize by the electronic magazine "Anagnostis."
In 2019, she was awarded the Grand Prize for Literature for her overall contribution to letters. Her short stories and novels have been translated into many European languages. Today, her books are published by Patakis Publishers.
