Vasilis Karavitis

Vasilis Karavitis was born in 1934 in the border town of Nea Orestiada, grew up in Piraeus, and came of age in 1950s Athens, where he studied law and practiced as a lawyer for several years. He published nine poetry collections, two prose works, and translated foreign post-war poetry, particularly focusing on innovative Polish poets who were then unknown in Greece (Herbert, Miłosz, Różewicz, Szymborska, etc.). He was one of the founding members of the Society of Authors and for many years a regular contributor to the magazine Diagonios in Thessaloniki.
