Arun Gandhi
Arun Gandhi was born in 1934 in Durban, South Africa. At the age of twelve, he was sent by his parents to India to live with his grandfather, Mahatma Gandhi, and learn from him. During this time, he learned about the principles of nonviolence, which he continues to advocate for to this day. Dr. Gandhi spent most of his adult life in India working as a journalist and bringing about social and economic changes for the poor and minorities. Together with his wife, he founded the Center for Social Change, which transformed the lives of millions in villages in the western state of Maharashtra. In 1987, he moved to the United States, and in 1991, he founded the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence at Christian Brothers University in Tennessee. In 2007, the institute was relocated to the University of Rochester in New York. In 2008, he resigned from the institute to establish the Gandhi Worldwide Education Institute, with the mission of founding basic education schools for the world's poor children.
