Giorgos P. Savvidis

Giorgos Panou Savvidis (1929-1995) was a scholar, editor, and professor of Modern Greek Philology. He began his studies at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens, but continued at King's College, Cambridge, and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he earned his doctorate in philology in 1966 with the dissertation "The Cavafy Editions (1891-1932)." He served as an adjunct professor of Modern Greek Philology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki from 1966, resigning in 1971 for academic and ethical reasons, and returned in 1974 as a full professor for another nine years (voluntary retirement). He was a permanent visiting professor of the George Seferis Chair of Modern Greek Studies at Harvard University from 1977 to 1984, when he voluntarily resigned and departed. His scholarly publications began in 1951, and he also collaborated with many publications (mainly the newspapers "To Vima" and "Ta Nea"). He edited the works of poets such as Seferis, Cavafy, Karyotakis, Sikelianos, Valaoritis, Kaisarios Dapontes, and others in an exemplary manner.
