Valerius Maximus

Valerius Maximus was a Roman historian and moralist of the 1st century AD, contemporary to Emperor Tiberius. His period of activity is placed between 14 and 31 AD. Very little is known about his life. It is believed that he might have descended from the Valeria family on his father's side and from Fabius Maximus on his mother's side. He served in Asia under Sextus Pompeius, consul in 14 AD, and was later welcomed into the court of Emperor Tiberius. He authored the work "Memorable Deeds and Sayings" between 24 and 31 AD, which is a collection of anecdotes intended to inspire the thoughts and discussions of rhetoricians and philosophers. Valerius Maximus's work was revisited many times in later antiquity and the Middle Ages. Two authors, in particular, Julius Paris and Januarius Nepotianus, engaged with his work between the 4th and 6th centuries AD.
