Giannis Vlachogiannis

Giannis Vlachogiannis (1867-1945) was born in Nafpaktos. His father, Odysseas Vlachos, came from a lineage of fighters from Roumeli, and his mother, Anastasia Gkioni, was from Souli. He had three brothers and four sisters. The memories of 1821 remained vivid in his mind and significantly shaped his personality. He received his early education in Nafpaktos and pursued secondary education in Zakynthos, Corinth, and Patras. In 1886, he enrolled in the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Athens in the Department of Philology. During his studies (which he did not complete), he worked as a private tutor and a proofreader for the newspaper "Efimerida tou Koromila." Later, he became an editor at "Estia," while with financial support from expatriates (including Emmanouil Benakis), he collected a vast amount of archival material from the 19th century, mainly related to the Greek War of Independence, and managed to publish a portion of it (such as the archives of Makrygiannis, Kasomoulis, and Spyromilios, the Chios archive, the Athens archive, and the biography of Karaiskakis). Vlachogiannis dedicated a significant part of his life to completing his archival research, traveling to Alexandria and London. His work was exceptionally systematic and contributed decisively to documenting the Greek history of the past century. In 1914, on his recommendation, Venizelos founded the General State Archives, where Vlachogiannis served as the first director until 1937. He died in 1945 in Athens during the German occupation. His first appearance in the literary field was in 1893 with the short story "O Xenitemenos" and the collection "Stories of Yiannos Epachtitis," consisting of three ethnographic short stories written in the demotic language. He quickly became popular in literary circles and was praised by Kostis Palamas. He collaborated with many literary magazines (such as "Techni," "Hegiso," "Mousa"), newspapers (such as "Estia," "Astrapí," "Efimeris"), and almanacs of his time. The financial difficulties that accompanied him throughout his life allowed him to publish only a small portion of his total work. He published the magazine "Propylaia" (six issues from 1901 to 1908), where he published poems, prose, and historical studies. On the occasion of the centennial celebration of Greek Independence, he self-published the short story collections "The Great Years" (1930, first published in 1914) and "The Old Heroes" (1931). His writings include poems, prose, historical studies, critical essays, articles, and even a one-act play for the theater ("Widowed Mother"). As a writer, he is mainly known for his prose production. Vlachogiannis attempted to combine historical (heroic-themed) and ethnographic elements with the primary goal of contributing to defining modern Greek identity and the psychological connection of modern Greeks with their past. The psychological and symbolic dimensions of his works are also of particular importance. The language of his writings is the demotic, which he adopted from the outset, even in his historical studies, although he did not participate in the language disputes of his time.
