Panos Karagiorgos

Professor Panos Karagiorgos studied at the Institute of Foreign Languages and Philologies at the University of Thessaloniki and later pursued further education at the Shakespeare Institute of the University of Birmingham, England, where he was awarded a Ph.D. in 1976. He taught English language and literature as a lecturer at the University of Ioannina and as a professor in the Department of Translation and Interpreting at the Ionian University in Corfu. He conducted research on Solomos and Kalvos and discovered unknown letters by them. He has published various studies and books on the works of Shakespeare, Byron, Rigas, Solomos, Kalvos, Heine, Ibsen, and Durrell. Major works include: "T. Spencer, English Philhellenism," translation, 1990; "A Brief History of English Literature," 1992; "Cultural Relations between Greece and Britain," 2002; "Topics in Ionian Literature," 2004 (published by the Society for the Dissemination of Beneficial Books). "An English-Greek Dictionary of Idioms," 1992; "Shakespeare Studies," 1995; "Beowulf" (Awarded by the Hellenic Society of Literary Translators, 1997); "Byron, The Curse of Athena," 1995 (Kyriakidis, Thessaloniki). "Landmarks in English Literature," 2000; "Greek Maxims and Proverbs," 2000 (Apostrofos, Corfu). "Confusing Words in English," 2002; "The Use of Prepositions," 2003 (Metaichmio, Athens). "British and German Ballads," 2014; "Heinrich Heine, Poems, selection," 2015 (Dioni, Athens). "Greek and English Proverbs," 2015; "Anglo-Hellenic Cultural Relations," 2015; Sp. Tzouvelis' "The Greek Poet Cavafy and History" (translation), 2016; "A Multilingual Dictionary of Maxims and Proverbs," 2017 (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, England). He is a member of the Hellenic Byron Society, the National Society of Greek Writers, and a lifetime member of the International Lawrence Durrell Society
