Vasilis K. Gounaris received his degree with a specialization in History (1983) and a postgraduate diploma (1985) in Modern History from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), and a doctoral degree in Modern History from the University of Oxford (St. Antony’s College), where he studied with a scholarship from the Ismene Fitch Charitable Trust (1985-88). He served as a Special Postgraduate Fellow in the Department of Modern and Contemporary History (1985) at AUTH. From 1990 to 2001, he directed the research center of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle Foundation (KEMIT) in Thessaloniki. Between 2001 and 2005, he served as Associate Professor of Social and Economic History of the Balkan Peninsula Countries in the Department of Balkan Studies at the University of Western Macedonia, based in Florina, where he was also Deputy Chairman and the first Director of the Postgraduate Studies Program. In 2004, he was elected Associate Professor of Modern History in the Department of History and Archaeology at AUTH, and in 2009, he became a Professor. During 2009-2010, he was a Visiting Professor at King’s College London, and in 2013, he was a Senior Visiting Scholar (Onassis Foundation USA) at Yale, Princeton, Columbia, George Washington Universities in the USA, and York University in Canada.
