Ivo Andric

Ivo Andrić was born in Dolac, Bosnia, near Travnik, on October 10, 1892. From 1912, he studied successively at the Universities of Zagreb, Vienna, Krakow, and Graz. With the outbreak of World War I, he was imprisoned by the Austrians in Split (1914-1917). After the war, he was appointed to the diplomatic service, where he served until 1941. Post-war, he was elected as a member of parliament for Bosnia and Herzegovina and became the president of the Association of Yugoslav Writers. In 1961, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. He initially emerged as a poet but gained worldwide recognition with his three major novels: "The Bridge on the Drina" (translated by Christos Gouvis, Kastaniotis Editions 1997), "The Chronicle of Travnik" (translated by Christos Gouvis, Kastaniotis Editions 1999), "The Woman from Sarajevo," and his novella "The Damned Yard." He also published two poetry collections and numerous short story collections. He passed away in Belgrade in 1975.
