Graduate with honors from the Moscow Institute of Cinematography (1965-1970) in Mikhail Romm's workshop. He worked as a director in radio (EIR, 1961-1963 and 1981-1984) and theater (Ionesco, The Lesson, French Institute, 1958; Dimitris Horn's troupe, "Kentrikon" theater, 1962-1964), and as a film critic for the newspapers Avgi and Dimokratiki Allagi (1961-1964). He conducted extensive research (1970-1973) in collaboration with Costa-Gavras, Nikos Svoronos, and Dimitris Despotidis on international newsreel archives in Europe and the USA, which contributed to the later production of the series Panorama of the Century (1982-1987 for ERT). He contributed to the establishment of the film archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1998-2000) and collaborated as a documentarian with the National Audiovisual Archive (EOA, 2008-2010). He directed many documentaries, including: 100 Hours of May (1963-1964, in collaboration with Dimos Theos, about the assassination of left-wing MP Grigoris Lambrakis); Visit Greece (Moscow 1970); Musical Journey with Domna Samiou (1976-1977 for ERT); The Piraeus of Yiannis Tsarouchis (1980); Panorama of the Century (1982-1987, in collaboration with Leon Loisio); Sergei Parajanov (1989-1990); Beauty Will Save the World (1992); In Search of Berenice (1997-1998); Junta is Here. Will It Pass? (2012-2013). He also directed feature films: Aris Velouchiotis - The Dilemma (1981), Doxobus (1987), Birthday Celebration or A Silent Balkan Story (1995), Captain Kemal, the Comrade (2007), The Great Utopia (2017). He has taught "Cinema and History Relations" at the Universities of Crete (Rethymno 1993-1996), Thessaly (Volos 2000-2002), and Panteion (Athens 2003). He served as the program manager for ERT's international documentary co-productions (History Doc) and has published texts on Greek and Balkan cinema in international publications (Centre Georges Pompidou, 1995; La Biennale di Venezia, 2000) and domestic ones (History of Modern Hellenism, volumes 6-10, Hellenic Letters, Athens 1993). He has translated works by Chekhov (Kastaniotis Editions), Andrea Camilleri (Patakis Editions), and recently Marina Tsvetaeva (Ikaros).
