Michalis G. Meraklis

Emeritus Professor of the University of Athens, folklorist, and philologist M. G. Meraklis was born in 1932 in Kalamata. He studied at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens and the University of Göttingen in Germany, where he also completed his doctoral dissertation. In 1975, he was appointed as a full professor of folklore at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Ioannina, where he also served as rector (1981-1982). From 1990 to 1999, he taught the same subject at the Department of Primary Education of the University of Athens, following an invitation. He is the president of the Hellenic Folklore Society and has served as president of the Panhellenic Union of Philologists. He has published books on folklore and (primarily modern Greek) philology and has authored numerous articles on these subjects.
