
Giannis Varveris
Giannis Varveris (1955-2011) was born in Athens. He studied law and published eleven poetry collections, starting with "En Fantasia kai Logo" (Kouros, Athens, 1975), while his last, twelfth collection was published shortly after his death ("Vatheaos Giratos", 2011). He also translated and published works by Aristophanes, Menander, Molière, Marivaux, Whitman, Cendrars, Prévert, Mrożek, Carrington, Ferré, and Brassens, as well as an anthology on death. Since 1976, he wrote theater reviews for magazines "Tomés" and "I Lexi," and the newspaper "I Kathimerini." These and other theoretical texts on theater were published in six volumes ("The Crisis of Theater" - five volumes, "Theater Square"). In 1996, he was awarded the State Prize for Criticism - Essay. His poems have been translated and included in anthologies in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Romanian. His translations of Attic and New Comedy were presented at Epidaurus and other theaters. In 2001, he received the Cavafy Prize for the collected edition "Poems 1975-1996." In 2002, he was awarded the Poetry Prize by the magazine "Diavazo" for the poetry collection "Sta Xena." In 2010, he was honored with the Petros Haris Foundation Award from the Academy of Athens for his entire poetic work. He was a member of the Society of Authors. He passed away suddenly in Athens on May 25, 2011.
