Antonis Fostieris
Antonis Fostieris was born in Athens in 1953 and hails from Amorgos. He studied Law in Athens and History of Law in Paris. He has published several poetry books, including "The Great Journey" (1971), "Interior Spaces or The Twenties" (1973), "Poetry within Poetry" (Kedros 1977), "Dark Love" (Kedros 1977, Egnatia/Tram 1979, Kastaniotis 1985, 1999), "The Devil Sang Correctly" (Egnatia 1981, Kastaniotis 1985, 1999), "The Will and the To of Death" (Kastaniotis 1987, 1990), "Thought Belongs to Mourning" (Kastaniotis 1996, 2000), "Precious Oblivion" (Kastaniotis 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007), "The Sound of the Pulse" (a collector's edition with original engravings by Al. Fassianos, Mimnermos 2007), and "Poetry 1970 - 2005" (a comprehensive edition of all his collections, Kastaniotis 2008, 2010). His poetry has been translated and published in many European languages. The books "Dark Love" and "The Devil Sang Correctly" were translated into English by Kimon Friar (1984, 1986) and into Danish by Willy Pedersen (1998). "Thought Belongs to Mourning" was translated into Spanish by Nina Angelidi and Carlos Spinedi (1998) and into Serbian by Momcilo Radic (2008). "Precious Oblivion" was translated into English by Tom Nairn and Dionysia Zervanou (2008), into French by Clio Muller (2008), into Italian by Nicola Crocetti (2005), and into Serbian by Momcilo Radic (2008). Michel Volkovitch translated selections from all his poetry books into French (1998), and Nicola Crocetti (2000, 2001) and Maurizio De Rosa (2002) translated them into Italian. From 1974 to 1976, he published and directed the magazine "The New Poetry." He translated Max Jacob's "Advice to a Young Poet" (Kastaniotis 1984). His poetry is included in the "Texts of Modern Greek Literature" for the third year of high school, has been set to music by Giannis Markopoulos, Thanos Mikroutsikos, and Thanasis Nikopoulos, and has been included in many Greek and foreign anthologies. In the "Greek Poetry" series by the record company "Lyra / Dionysos," the CD "Antonis Fostieris Reads Fostieris" was released in 2009, featuring readings of 55 of his poems. He has been honored with the International Cavafy Award (1993), the Vrettakos Award of the Municipality of Athens (1998), the Poetry Award from the magazine Diavazo (2004), and the State Poetry Award (2004). In 2010, the Academy of Athens awarded him the Kostas and Eleni Ouranis Foundation Poetry Prize for his entire body of work. He is a member of the Society of Authors. In collaboration with Thanasis Niarchos, he directed the annual publication "Poetry (Poetry '75 - Poetry '81)" for seven years, translated Henry Miller's "The Time of the Assassins" (Egnatia/Tram 1978, Nefeli 1982) and Boris Vian's "Poems" (Gnosis 1982, 1992), and compiled the anthologies "Contemporary Erotic Poetry" (Kastaniotis 1987, 2006), "Greek Poets on the Sea" (Kastaniotis 1997), "Poetry on Poetry" (Kastaniotis 2007), and "Poetic Dialogues / Greek Poems for Foreign Poets" (Odos Panos 2012), the collective volume "Aegean: Literature and Art" ("The Word" / Ministry of the Aegean 2001), as well as the volume of conversations with fifty writers and artists "In Second Person" (Kastaniotis 1990). Since January 1981, he has been publishing and directing the well-known literary magazine "The Word" (State Magazine Award 2008). Entries with his biographical and bibliographical details are included in literary histories, dictionaries, and encyclopedias ("Domi," "Papyros-Larousse-Britannica," "Hydria-Cambridge-Helios," etc.).
