André Gorz

André Gorz was born in Vienna in February 1923. He studied engineering in Switzerland. He acquired French citizenship in 1954, at which point he adopted the new civil name Gérard Horst. Embracing Sartre's views as early as 1941, he became well-known primarily for his essay "Le Traître." In the 1950s, he was one of the directors of "Temps Modernes." He also worked at "Express" for ten years. Gorz was one of the founders of "Nouvel Observateur," with which he collaborated from 1964 to 1983, signing his articles under the pseudonym Michel Bosquet. The French philosopher died by suicide on September 24, 2007, along with his partner, who was suffering from an incurable illness, at their home in Vosnon.
