René Girard

René Girard was born in 1923 in Avignon. His particular sensitivity to cultural heritage (his father was a curator at the Calvet Museum and the Palace of the Popes) led him to study history and archival science at the renowned École des Chartes. In 1947, he moved to the United States. He taught French literature and anthropology at the Universities of Buffalo, Johns Hopkins, and Stanford (California), where he also resided. He became a member of the French Academy in 2005. His works available in Greek include: "The Scapegoat," "Violence and the Sacred" (Exantas 1991), "The Ancient Road of the Ungodly" (Exantas 1991), "Shakespeare, the Flames of Jealousy" (Exantas 1993), "Things Hidden Since the Foundation of the World" (Christakis 1994), "Deceit, Desire and the Novel" (Indiktos 2001), "I Saw Satan Fall Like Lightning" (Exantas 2002), "Critiques from the Underground" (Estia Bookstore). He passed away on November 4, 2015.
