Archbishop of Athens Chrysostomos I, also known as Chrysostomos Papadopoulos (Madytos, Eastern Thrace, 1868 - Athens, October 22, 1938), was a Greek theologian, religious leader, and academic. Archbishop Chrysostomos began his clerical career by studying at the Theological School of the Holy Cross in Constantinople. He then continued his studies at the School of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem, the Evangelical School of Smyrna, the Theological School of the University of Athens, and the theological academies of Kiev and Saint Petersburg, where he earned his doctorate. He served as a professor at the Theological School of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem (1895), head of the Church of the Annunciation in Alexandria, Egypt, director of the Rizarios School in Athens (1911), and professor of church history at the Theological School of the University of Athens (1914-1923). On February 23, 1923, he was elected Archbishop of Athens, a position he held until his death in 1938. In 1926, he was appointed a member of the newly established Academy of Athens. One of the issues Archbishop Chrysostomos I addressed was the calendar change from the Julian (old) to the Gregorian. Before being elected Archbishop, he advocated for a complete change, including the calculation of Easter. Later, upon his elevation to the archiepiscopal throne, he supported the calendar change. Additionally, during Archbishop Chrysostomos's tenure (1928), the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece and the Patriarchal Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate approved the extension of the administrative rights of the Church of Greece to the "New Lands," i.e., the territories annexed to the Greek state after the Balkan Wars.
