Guy Saunier

Guy Saunier was born in Marseille in 1934. He studied classical philology at the Sorbonne. He served as a researcher at the French National Center for Scientific Research and as a visiting professor at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Since 1984, he has been a professor of Modern Greek Philology and the director of the Modern Greek Institute at the Sorbonne (Paris IV). He specializes in folk songs, on which he has published three books and numerous articles. In the field of written literature, he focuses on Papadiamantis, Melpo Axioti, and Nikos Kavvadias. He taught Empeirikos at the Sorbonne for two and a half years. Under the pseudonym Michel Saunier, he has translated into French "Argo" by Empeirikos, "The Last Temptation" and "Report to Greco" by Nikos Kazantzakis, "The Murderess" by Alexandros Papadiamantis, "The Shift" by N. Kavvadias, "The Shaven Heads" by Nikos Kasdaglis, "Elements for the Decade of the Sixties" by Thanasis Valtinos, various texts by G. Tsarouchis, among others. His books published in Greek by Agra Editions include: "Andreas Empeirikos: Mythology and Poetics," 2001, "Lucifer and Abyss: The Personal Myth of Papadiamantis," 2002, "'This Body So Sinful...' Research into the Mythical World of Nikos Kavvadias," 2004, and "The Transformations of Kadmos: Research into the Work of Melpo Axioti," 2005.
