Emmanuel Rhoides was born in Syros in 1836. As the son of a wealthy family, he spent his childhood and youth in Europe. In 1841, he settled in Genoa, where the liberal revolution of 1848-49 had a decisive impact on his ideological orientation. He then returned to Ermoupoli to attend the Greek-American high school, later moved to Berlin to study philosophy, and eventually ended up in Romania. From 1864 onwards, he lived permanently in Athens. In 1866, he published his book "The Papess Joanna," which was condemned by the church and led to his prosecution. He passed away in Athens in 1904.
