Epiktitos
Epictetus was born around 50 AD in Hierapolis, Phrygia, to insignificant parents. He later became the slave of Epaphroditus, a freedman and favorite of Nero. In Rome, he attended the lectures of a well-known Stoic teacher and, after gaining his freedom, began teaching himself. Throughout his life, he honestly applied the principles he taught. He lived modestly, and it was said that his house never needed a lock.
