Eleni Varopoulou

Eleni Varopoulou is a theater scholar, theater and art critic, translator, and essayist. Since 1974, she has worked as a theater critic and journalist for various Greek newspapers (mainly "To Vima") and European magazines. Her writing primarily focuses on European cultural topics and contemporary trends in international theater. She has translated works by Heiner Müller, Walter Benjamin, Hermann Broch, Bertolt Brecht, and Goethe. She has taught theater studies at the Universities of Athens and Patras, as well as at the Institut für Theater-, Film- und Medienwissenschaft at J. W. Goethe University (Frankfurt, Germany). She served as the President of the Hellenic Center of the International Theatre Institute (1986-1992) and founded and directed the Argos Festival (1992-1997). As an art critic, she organized exhibitions such as "16 Books - 16 Views" in 1980, "Portrait of the Artist and Social Environment" in 1981 at the French Institute of Athens, and the Greek Participation in the "Quadrennial of Architecture and Theatre Design" in Prague in 1991, among others. She is a special advisor to the Advisory Council of the Athens Concert Hall Organization and serves as the artistic director of the Summer Academy of the National Theatre of Greece. Additionally, she is a special artistic associate at the National Theatre of Greece.
