Giorgos Markopoulos

Born in Messini in 1951, he has lived and worked in Athens since 1965. He studied economics and statistics. Alongside poetry, he writes literary reviews and other texts for magazines and newspapers. He has published seven poetry collections, one collection of prose, two volumes of his writings on the works of other poets, and two monographs (on football in Greek poetry and on the work of Tasos Leivaditis). He has also edited books on poetry. In 1996, he was awarded the "Cavafy Prize" in Alexandria, Egypt. In 1999, he received the State Poetry Prize for his collection "Do Not Cover the River," which was subsequently nominated for the European Prize in 2000. A selection from all his poetry collections was translated into French by Michel Volkovitch under the general title "Ne recouvre pas la riviere" (published by Desmos/ "Cahiers grecs", Paris 2000). In 2011, he was again honored with the State Poetry Prize for his collection "Hidden Hunter" and with the Ouranis Foundation Award from the Academy of Athens for his entire body of work. He has been a member of the Society of Authors since 1982 and served on its board of directors from 1984 to 1986.
