
Eric R. Kandel
Eric R. Kandel (Vienna, 1929) is an emeritus professor at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, a professor and director at the Kavli Institute for Brain Science, and a senior investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Professor Kandel was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2000. He lived in Vienna until the age of nine and emigrated to the United States in 1939, one year after Hitler's rise to power. He currently resides in New York City with his wife, Denise, a professor of sociomedical sciences in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University.
