Michael Llewellyn - Smith

Michael Llewellyn Smith was born in 1939 and grew up in England. He studied Classics at New College, Oxford, and completed his dissertation at St Anthony's College. He has spent a significant part of his life in Greece. As a member of the British Diplomatic Service, he served in Moscow, Paris, Warsaw, and twice in Athens. He was the British Ambassador to Poland (1991-1996) and to Greece (1996-1999). In addition to "The Ionian Vision," he has written a book about Greece ("The Great Island: A Study of Crete") as well as "The Olympics of 1896 in Athens: The Birth of the Modern Olympic Games." He has also published a history of the old British Embassy building in Athens (formerly the residence of Eleftherios Venizelos) as well as numerous articles and speeches.
