Carol Shields

Carol Shields was born in 1935 in Chicago and moved to Winnipeg, Canada, in 1957, later acquiring Canadian citizenship. She studied at the University of Ottawa and taught for many years at the University of Manitoba. She had five children, one son and four daughters. Shields wrote novels, short stories, and plays that were repeatedly honored with numerous awards. As one of the most prominent representatives of contemporary Canadian literature, her reputation extended far beyond the borders of Canada and North America. Her works include: "Small Ceremonies" (1976), "The Box Garden" (1977), "Happenstance" (1980), "A Fairly Conventional Woman" (1982), "Various Miracles" (short stories, 1985), "Swann: A Mystery" (1987), and "The Orange Fish" (short stories, 1989). In Greek, her subsequent novels were published by Oceanida: "The Republic of Love" (1992), "The Stone Diaries" (1993, awarded the Canadian Governor General's Award the same year and the National Book Critics Circle Award and Pulitzer Prize in the USA in 1995), and "Larry's Party" (1997, awarded the Orange Prize for Fiction). Additionally, her last novel, "Unless" (2002, awarded the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize and shortlisted for the Man Booker, Giller, and Orange prizes), was published by Livani. She passed away in Victoria, Canada, in July 2003, at the age of 68.
