Nadine Gordimer

Nadine Gordimer, the daughter of Jewish immigrants of Russian descent, was born on November 20, 1923, in Springs, a small town near Johannesburg, South Africa. She began writing at the age of nine and published her first short story at fifteen. Her first collection of short stories, titled "Face to Face," was published in 1949. This was followed by eight more collections of short stories and eleven novels, which strongly reflect her opposition to the then-racist regime of her homeland. With her novel "The Conservationist," she won the Booker Prize in 1974. In 1991, Gordimer was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for her body of work. She was married to art dealer Reinhold Cassirer and was the mother of three children. She passed away on July 13, 2014, at the age of 90.
