Antonio Lobo Antunes

Antonio Lobo Antunes (1942-2026) was born in Lisbon, Portugal. He studied medicine and specialized in psychiatry. He holds a doctorate from the Catholic University of Lisbon and practiced as a psychiatrist in the city’s hospitals. His professional experience, particularly his service as a military doctor during the Colonial War in Angola, along with his experiences of love, form the main thematic framework of his novels. His books have been published in the USA, Canada, the UK, Latin America, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland. He has written more than twenty novels, which have been translated into dozens of languages and have earned significant literary distinctions, including the "Grand Prize for Novel and Novella" from the Portuguese Writers’ Association for his work "Auto dos Danados" in 1985. He was awarded Portugal’s highest literary honor, the Camoes Prize, in 2007. For several years, he has been nominated by his country for the Nobel Prize in Literature. In 2008, he received the Literary Award for Romance Languages at the Guadalajara International Book Fair (Mexico). As the highest distinction for a living author, his work has been included and will be published in the Bibliotheque de la Pleiade series by Gallimard.
