Nikos - Alexis Aslanoglou

Nikos - Alexis Aslanoglou
Nikos Aslanoglou (1931-1996, who chose the pseudonym Alexis during his teenage years inspired by the character from Dostoevsky's "The Insulted and Humiliated") was born in Thessaloniki. His parents were refugees from Asia Minor. He graduated from the Experimental School of the University of Thessaloniki (1949), where he later studied French literature. Around 1950, following his father's death, he became co-director (alongside his brother-in-law Vasilis Frangos) of the Maker wool factory, which went bankrupt shortly thereafter. He then moved to France and Egypt, continuing his studies at the Universities of Cairo and Aix-en-Provence. He worked as a librarian at the Aristotle University, as a teacher at a foreign language institute, as a scientific associate at the School of Architecture in Thessaloniki, and after 1980, when he settled in Athens, as an editor and literary consultant at Efstathiadis Publishing House. In 1951, he co-founded the magazine "Skepsi" with K. Katsanos, which released only one issue, featuring Aslanoglou's first essay titled "Death and Birth in the Poetry of Giorgos Themelis." He made his literary debut in 1952 with the mimeographed edition of the verse play "Sea and Synchronization," an excerpt of which was published in 1953 in the student magazine "Pyrsos." He was also a member of the editorial board of the same magazine (1953-1955) and published eight more poems there. A key figure in Dinos Christianopoulos's magazine "Diagonal" (1958-1962), he also collaborated with the magazines "Dialogue," "New Era," "Responsibility," "Ausblicke," and the newspapers "Drasis" and "Naftemporiki." He passed away in Athens. Aslanoglou's poetry was influenced by the artistic movements of neo-symbolism and existentialism, with a significant role played by the memory of experiences and events, the themes of post-civil war Greek reality, and influences from the poetry of Seferis, Karyotakis, and Agras. Notably, his translation work includes Rimbaud's "Illuminations."
