Dimitris Mardas

Dimitris Mardas was born in Istanbul in 1955. He completed his undergraduate studies at the Department of Economics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He pursued his postgraduate studies at the Universities of Paris I-Sorbonne (1979-80) and Paris II-Pantheon (1980-1982) in economics and received his Ph.D. from the University of Paris II-Pantheon in 1990. He first worked at the Directorate-General for Financial Affairs (DG II) of the European Commission in 1987. From 1992 to the end of 1994, he worked again at the European Commission, initially at the Directorate-General for the Internal Market - Industrial Affairs (DG III) and subsequently at the Directorate-General for the Internal Market (DG XV). During his stay in Brussels from 1992 to 1994, he participated as a member of the European Commission's team in the "Uruguay Round" negotiations. From April 2000 to February 2002, he was appointed General Secretary of Commerce at the Ministry of Development, and from October 2002 to April 2004, he served as the CEO of the Hellenic Foreign Trade Board (HEPO). In 2004, he was elected as a representative to the Assembly of Representatives of the Economic Chamber of Greece. He authored the books: "Greece-EEC. Greek Agriculture and the Problem of Its Integration into the EEC," 1978, "The Economics of Public Procurement," 1999, and "From the EEC to the EU," 2005. He has published a series of articles in English and French on international trade, foreign investments, technological research, and public procurement policy.
