Sofia Ntenisi

Graduate of the Moraitis School, the Department of English Philology at the University of Athens (BA, Ph.D. in Comparative Literature), and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (M.A. in English Literature). She has been a scholarship recipient at these universities. She is an Assistant Professor of History and Criticism of Literature at the Athens School of Fine Arts, where she has been teaching English language and terminology of visual arts since 1988 and comparative literature since the academic year 2006-2007. She has taught English language and terminology of the humanities at the School of Philosophy of the University of Crete (1983-1988) and Modern Greek Literature at the University of Cyprus (winter semester 2001-2002) as a visiting professor. From the academic year 2008-2009, she will offer seminar courses on comparative content in art and literature. Her research primarily focuses on 19th-century prose (original and translated) and women's issues. She has collaborated as a researcher with the Institute for Mediterranean Studies and the National Research Foundation. Her works have been published by prominent publishing houses (Kastaniotis, Periplous, University Editions of Crete, Sokolis, Domos, Moraitis School Study Society, University Studio Press, Gutenberg, Hellenic Publishing, etc.) and in reputable literary journals (Politis, Diavazo, Lexi, Dendro, Periplous, Comparison, Microphilological, Ylandron, Kampos-Cambridge Papers in Modern Greek, Cahiers Balkaniques, Bulletin de Liaison Neo-Hellenique, Neohellikon, etc.). She has participated in numerous Greek and international conferences (Edmonton Alberta, Edinburgh Scotland, Dublin Ireland) and has been invited to give lectures at significant universities abroad: Selwyn College Cambridge, University of Birmingham, King's College London. In recent years, she has been scientifically engaged with gender studies. Since the academic year 2005-2006, she has been the scientific director of the research program "The Female Artistic and Literary Presence in Magazines of Word and Art, 1900-1940," implemented by the Athens School of Fine Arts within the framework of EPEAEK II-3rd CSF and completed in June 2008. The database of the aforementioned research program will be deposited in the Library of the Athens School of Fine Arts for use by the research community. Lastly, she has served as an examiner for the State Scholarships Foundation, a scientific reviewer for the University Editions of Cyprus and the Journal of Modern Greek Studies at Johns Hopkins University, a board member of the Hellenic Society for General and Comparative Literature, and a founding member of the Papadiamantis Studies Society.
