Giorgos Alogoskoufis

George Alogoskoufis was born in Athens on October 17, 1955. He grew up in the heart of the city, where he spent most of his life. George Alogoskoufis is one of the most distinguished Greek economists, with significant and successful activity both in Greece and abroad. He graduated with honors from the Department of Economics at the Law School of the University of Athens (1977) and earned his Ph.D. (1981) from the London School of Economics. He served as a professor at the University of London (from 1984) and became a professor at the Athens University of Economics and Business (1990) at the young age of 35. With a rich research and writing portfolio, he has published four books and over 40 papers in major international scientific journals, with numerous citations in international literature. His doctoral thesis (1981) was awarded the Sayers Prize by the University of London. In December 2002, his book "The Drachma: From the Phoenix to the Euro" was awarded by the Academy of Athens. He served as Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors of the Ministry of National Economy (1992-1993) and as an advisor to the European Commission and the World Bank. In 1996, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for the New Democracy party. In 2000, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Athens A' with New Democracy. In March 2004, he was re-elected as a Member of Parliament for Athens A' and assumed the position of Minister of Economy and Finance. George Alogoskoufis is married to Dika Agapitidou, with whom he has three children, Spyros, Athinaida, and Danae.
