Dimitris Stamelos

Dimitris Stamelos was born in 1931 in the village of Marathias, Evrytania. He studied political science and entered the field of journalism. He made his literary debut in 1948, and the following year, he published his first book, a poetry collection. Since then, many of his works have been published in newspapers and magazines. He has published 16 books, focusing particularly on significant figures and events of the Ottoman period and the Greek War of Independence, representative figures of modern Greek intellectual life, and fundamental aspects of our folk culture. He was awarded the State Prize for Literature twice, in 1976 for his book "Makrygiannis" and in 2001 for his book "Nikitaras," and in 1995, he received an award from the Academy of Athens for the "Folklore Gallery." He was a regular member of the Union of Editors of Daily Newspapers of Athens, the Society of Greek Writers, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Center of the International Association of Literary Critics. He passed away in April 2005.
