Giorgos K. Karavasilis

Giorgos Karavasilis, a poet, translator, and essayist, was born in Athens in 1949. He completed his theatrical studies at the Vafeia School, which he began under Dimitris Rondiris. He made his literary debut with the collection "The Writing and the Knife" in 1970, followed by collections such as "Cultivation of Blood," "The Sensual," "The Secret Rooms of the Tower," and many more poems, culminating in the comprehensive edition "Poems 1963-2003" in 2004. He also published the essay collection "On the Carpet" and anthologies like "The Woman of the Waters in Lyric Poetry," "Greek Easter," "Sappho's Sapphires," and "Handbook of Erotic Speech." He translated works by Chamfort, Théophile Gautier, Jacques Cazotte, Charles Cros, Pierre Louÿs, Jean Cayrol, August Strindberg, Ivan Turgenev, Leonid Andreyev, among others, as well as French poetry (Paul Éluard, Tristan Corbière, etc.). He contributed as a literary critic to "Kathimerini," "To Vima," and "Proti," as well as to ERT in art television programs. He passed away in Athens on April 27, 2004, at the age of 55.
