Arrianos Flavios o ek Nikomideias

Flavius Arrianus (95-175 AD) hailed from Nicomedia in Bithynia. Born into a prominent family, he was honored with priestly offices in his city and later held high administrative and military positions within the Roman state. As a young man, he attended the teachings of Epictetus, of which he recorded the fundamental elements. In the mid-2nd century, he went to Athens, where he gained citizenship and was elected as an eponymous archon (147-48 AD). There, he matured as a writer and emerged as a notable representative of Atticism. In addition to his work on the philosophy of Epictetus, he authored military treatises and biographies. However, the most significant part of his oeuvre is the "Anabasis of Alexander," the most important source on Alexander the Great's campaign in Asia, and its complement, the "Indica." Arrian, drawing from earlier historians, combined elements and compared information, composing a work characterized by accuracy, sound judgment, and an engaging style.
