Robert Browning

Robert Browning was born in 1914 in Glasgow. He studied at Kelvinisde Academy in Glasgow (1931-1935), where he excelled in classical studies. He also attended Balliol College, Oxford (1935-1939). He taught at Merton College, Oxford from 1946 to 1947, and then served as a lecturer in Classical Philology at University College, University of London from 1947 to 1965. From 1965 until his retirement, he was a Professor of Classical Studies and Ancient History at Birkbeck College of the same university. He is a member of the Council for the Promotion of Greek and Latin Studies, a member of the British Academy, and the chairman of the English committee for the return of the Parthenon sculptures to Greece. Professor Browning visited Greece and Cyprus many times. He contributed to numerous prestigious scientific journals, encyclopedias, and dictionaries, and published several works.
