Dionysis Savvopoulos was a songwriter, meaning he performed his own lyrics and music. He is considered the pioneer of the school of Greek singer-songwriters who compose music, write lyrics, and perform their own songs. He was born in Thessaloniki on December 2, 1944. He studied law at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, though he did not complete his studies. He released 15 albums of his own songs, as well as live recordings of six of his concerts and performances. He was imprisoned and tortured by the junta in 1967. He gave concerts in Greece and around the world. He composed music for theater productions in Athens and at Epidaurus, as well as for cinema. Five books featuring his lyrics, scores, and interviews have been published by Ikaros, Ithaki, and Polytron, and the collection "I Souma," a compendium of all his lyrics, was published by Ianos. He hosted his own shows on television and radio. In 2017, he was named an honorary doctor of the Department of Philology at the School of Philosophy of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Family status: Married to Aspa since 1967. Children: Kornilios (1968) and Romanos (1972). Grandchildren: Dionysis (2004) and Andreas (2006).
