Isaac Bashevis Singer

Isaac Bashevis Singer was born in 1902 in Leoncin, Poland, to a rabbi father and a mother who was the daughter of a rabbi. In 1935, he emigrated to America, where he lived until his death in 1991 in Florida, at the age of 88. In 1978, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. He wrote novels, short stories, and children's books. All of his work is written in Yiddish, the language of the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe. The world of his novels and short stories is that of Yiddish-speaking Jews, whether they live in a small town in Poland or in the Jewish neighborhoods of New York.
