Eyagelos A. Zachos - Papazachariou

Evangelos Zachos-Papazachariou (also known as Emmanouil Papazachariou, E. Zachos) was born in Athens to Pontian refugees from the 1923 population exchange. A student of Simon Karas from 1952 to 1958, he studied ethnology, ethnomusicology, Eastern and Balkan languages and cultures in Paris. He earned his doctorate in comparative literature from the Sorbonne in 1968 and published the books "La poesie populaire des Grecs" (1966), "Albanie" (1971), and "Babel Balkanique. Histoire politique des alphabets utilisés dans les Balkans" (1975). In Greece, he published books such as "The Piazza" (1980), "The Piazza Dictionary" (1981, 2nd ed. "Dictionary of Greek Slang", 1999), "The Other Theophilos" (1998), "We Are Pontians" (1984), "The Stranger of New Kerasounta" (1984), "Languages, Alphabets, and National Ideology in Greece and the Balkans" (2000), "East of the East" (2005), "Markos and Popularity" (2005), and "Popularity in Old Greek Cinema" (2010). He was involved in cinema, theater, television, and music as a screenwriter, director, lyricist, and composer. He occasionally taught ethnography, social anthropology, and Balkan studies at the Universities of Thrace, Thessaly, and Macedonia.
