Helmut Schmidt

Helmut Schmidt was born in 1918 in Hamburg. From 1961 to 1965, he served as Senator of the Interior in his hometown. He was the Minister of Defense from 1969 to 1972, the Federal Minister of Finance and Economy in 1972, the Federal Minister of Finance from 1972 to 1974, and the Chancellor from 1974 to 1982. He was a member of the German Federal Parliament (Social Democratic Party) from 1953 to 1961 and from 1965 to 1987, and he served as the chairman of his party's parliamentary group from 1966 to 1969. He was also the publisher of the weekly newspaper "Die Zeit." Helmut Schmidt authored numerous books. He passed away on November 10, 2015, at the age of 96.
