Maria Komninou

Maria Komninou holds degrees in psychology, sociology, and economics (P.S.E Brunell University) and earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the London School of Economics in 1984. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Media Studies at the University of Athens, where she has contributed to the establishment of the department's audiovisual media lab. She serves as Treasurer and Member of the Board of Directors of the Greek Film Archive. Maria is responsible for the European training program "Archimedia" in Greece, which focuses on the protection of cinematic cultural heritage. Her research interests include Communication Theory, Political Communication, Film Theory, and European cinema, with a particular emphasis on Greek cinema. Her notable works include "Society, Power, and Mass Media" (co-edited with Ch. Lyrintzis, 1988), "Community, Society, and Ideology" (co-edited with E. Papataxiarchis, 1990), and "From the Market to the Spectacle: The Formation of the Public Sphere and Cinema in Contemporary Greek Society 1950-1996" (2001).
