Giosef Eligia

Joseph Eliya (his real name was Iosif Kapoulia) was born in Ioannina in 1901. He studied at the French-speaking Alliance Israelite high school. In 1922, he moved to Athens and worked in private schools as a French language teacher. In 1930, he was appointed as a French teacher at the Kilkis high school, from where he was urgently transferred to Athens and passed away from typhus at the Evangelismos Hospital in 1931. He collaborated with the magazine "Noumas," "Nea Estia," among others. Until his death, he was a regular contributor to the "Great Greek Encyclopedia" of Pyrsos, for which he wrote various articles on Jewish religion and literature. He also wrote poems and critiques and translated Hebrew texts, mainly from the Bible, such as the "Song of Songs," "Ruth," "Psalms," and others, while also introducing modern Hebrew poetry and prose to Greece.
